Property Taxes:

  • Taxes become delinquent February 1. Penalties and interest will begin accruing on that day on any unpaid balances. Excludes quarterly payments previously set up AND 1st payment made.
  • An additional 20% delinquent tax attorney fee will be added on July 1 to any unpaid balances.
  • Missing tax statements are the responsibility of the taxpayer.
  • It is the taxpayers’ responsibility to notify the Central Appraisal District office of any change in address or to add/change any exemptions. (979) 532-8931
  • An afterhours/holiday Drop Box is located on the West side of the building by the flag poles for your convenience in Wharton. There is also an afterhours/holiday Drop Box located in front of the building by the flag pole for your convenience in El Campo. Please include name, daytime phone number and account number. Please NO CASH in drop box.
  • All payments made by debit/credit card will incur a convenience fee.
  • Payments can made online at www.whartoncountytaxoffice.com or by phone at (877) 690-3729 and use jurisdiction code 5315

  • Make payments in our office, on our website at www.whartoncountytaxoffice.com, by phone or mail.
  • Accepted methods of payment include:  cash, checks, money orders, cashier’s check, debit/credit card and E-checks. All payments must be in US Funds Only!
  • All mailed in payments must be POSTMARKED on or before due date.(A postmark is an official mark stamped on the letter giving place, date and time of posting and serving to cancel the postage stamp.)
  • All web & phone payments must be processed before 12am Central Standard Time prior to the date the taxes become delinquent to avoid penalties and interest. Accounts will incur a $30 service charge on all returned checks.
  • A Payment Agreement pay out option is available on all delinquent taxes after July for the current year.
  • Partial payments are always accepted anytime taxes are due.
  • Quarterly pay option for Over 65, Social Security Disability Exemption or Veteran’s Exemption accounts.
  • All payments must be made on time. Any missed payments will accrue penalties and interest.

 

  1.   1st payment by January 31st
  2. 2nd payment by March 31st
  3. 3rd payment by May 31st
  4. And 4th payment by July 31st

 

Auto Transactions:

  • Q: What is the cost of title transfer?

    A: We can’t give a price until we enter all of the information into the system

  • Q: How much is the Sales Tax for a title transfer?

    A: 6.25%

  • Q: Do I need my renewal to get my registration sticker?

    A: No.  The inspection report (until January 2025 – HB 3297) and license plate number will suffice.

  • Q: How many days to transfer a title?

    A: Title and registration for vehicle must be filed within 30 days from the date of sale to avoid any penalties.

  • Q: What if I lose my registration sticker and/or license plate?
    A: Provide the license plate number and a fee of $6.50 for replacement.
